John Daniel Shugars, Sr., of Liberty, passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2024, at his home. He was 92.
Born on April 11, 1932, in Casey County, Kentucky, he was a son of the late W.K. Shugars, Jr. and Vera E. Huntsman Shugars. He worked in rehabilitation with the KY School for the Deaf as a Counselor from 1967-1971. John then went on to work as an Agricultural Teacher from 1971-1974, Horticulture Teacher from 1974-1986, and Principal from 1986-2004, all for Casey County Vocational School. He also formerly worked for Farm Bureau in Insurance Sales and worked in greenhouse and landscaping. John was a United States Army veteran. He was a member of Liberty United Methodist Church among many other organizations: Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 47 as well as Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 123, Youth Service Advisory Board, Lake Cumberland ADD Board Member, KY Tech State Market Committee, Kiwanis Member, Renaissance Kentucky Liberty Committee Member, Chamber of Commerce Member, Craftsman Lodge #722 Member, and Farm Bureau Director. John was awarded the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award and received KY Colonel Recognition under three governors.
He is survived by his wife, Carolee Popplewell Shugars, who he wed on June 4, 1958; a son, John Daniel (and Melissa) Shugars, Jr. of Liberty; a daughter, Jennifer (and Jerry Johnson) Shugars of Liberty; a granddaughter, Ashley Jean Ann (and Adam) Dean; and two great-grandchildren, Kash Dean and Kamden Dean.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Olivia Lee Shugars; and three brothers, Bill Shugars, Owen Shugars, and Pat Shugars.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, June 21, 2024, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Ed Parton and Bro. Rodney Koger officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery with military honors provided by the Casey County Veterans Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home. Masonic rites will be held at 7:00 P.M on Thursday.
Memorial contributions may take the form of donations to the Casey County Food Pantry or the Trail Scouts through First Baptist Church of Liberty.
