James Shearl Murphy, of Liberty, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Taylor Regional Hospital in Campbellsville. He was 91.
Born on June 15, 1933, in Casey County, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Herman and Elsie Brown Murphy. Shearl was a farmer and a retired United States Postal Service carrier. He was a member of Noel’s Chapel First Church of God. He loved to play music, especially the guitar and keyboard, and was a former member of the Crestonaire’s music group. Shearl was a United States Air Force veteran having achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Noel Murphy, who he wed on May 29, 1954; a son, James “Jim” (Connie) Murphy of Liberty; daughter-in-law, Sue Murphy of Liberty; three grandchildren, Chris (Alana) Murphy of Norton, KS, Stephanie (Cameron) Cain of Liberty, and Delayna Murphy (Dr. Geoffrey Ball) of Evansville, IN; three great-grandchildren, Autumn (Isaac) Shephard, Kyra Cain, and Mariah Cain; two brothers, Marion Murphy of Liberty and Howard Murphy of Versailles; and caretakers, Belinda Peyton and Vivian Peyton.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son, John N. Murphy; a brother, John Bearl Murphy; and sisters, Delorus “Dee” Campbell, Anita Fletcher, Lorene Noel, and Ethel Louise Murphy.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Cody Sturgill officiating. Burial will follow in Noel’s Chapel Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Casey County Veteran’s Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Chris Murphy, Cameron Cain, Isaac Shephard, Scott Harne, Todd Harne, and Justin Bryant.
Honorary pallbearers will be his granddaughters, great-granddaughters, and Alana Murphy.
