Donald Smither Obituary

Donald Dean Smither passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, in Liberty, Kentucky, surrounded by his family. He was 75.

Born on February 26, 1946, in Casey County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Basil and Ova Lee Monday Smither. Donnie was a member of the Noel’s Chapel First Church of God. He loved his family, friends, and he never met a stranger. He was always willing to lend a helping hand when needed. He loved to talk and enjoyed morning gatherings at McDonalds. He served as President of the Casey County Farm Bureau for numerous years. Donnie was an active member of the Craftsman and Rocky Ford Lodges, DAV, Shriners, and the Scottish Rites. He retired from the Kentucky Department of Transportation as a Professional Engineer. Donnie served his country as a United States Navy veteran and later retired as a Sergeant First Class from the Army Reserves.

Survivors include his devoted wife of fifty-one years, Charlotte Land Smither; a daughter, Leah Renee (Matthew) Atwood; two grandsons, Landon and Wade Atwood; a daughter, Kimberly Hope (Eddie) Warren; four grandchildren, Jay (Allie) Warren, Mandy Warren Cummins, Hope Warren, Kayla (Jeremy) Deborde; and ten great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include a sister, Donna Sue (and the late Glenn) Girard of Goshen, Ohio; a nephew, Ronald Girard of Goshen, Ohio; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.  

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, March 7, 2021, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home with Bro. Cameron Cain and Bro. Rodney Karnes officiating. Burial will follow in Brush Creek Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Casey County Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 6, 2021, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home. Masonic rites will be held at 7:00 P.M. Please enter through the front doors (Campbellsville Street side) when you arrive at the funeral home. Social distancing guidelines must be followed by everyone in attendance.  Facial coverings ARE required.

Pallbearers will be Gary Smither, Michael Marcum, David Dickens, Joe Cox, David Carmicle, and Johnny Williams.

The family of Donnie Smither would like to express sincere thanks to their church friends and family for providing food and support. Special thanks to the staff of Hospice of Lake Cumberland for their support and care of Donnie during his final journey. He will be greatly missed but we know he is with Jesus, the one he referred to as his best friend.
